(Ephesians 5:8)
Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!
As exhilarating as the “joy of learning” may be, it is complemented by the joy of teaching.
Pius XII (1876-1958)
Eugenio Pacelli, pope from 1939 to 1958
“A word is often nothing more than a flash of lightning. In the night and the storm, a flash of lightning may be enough to set a traveler back on the right path; and even on the safest of paths, a single flash of lightning is enough to strike down the unwary. Such are the effects of good or bad words. As for a book, its effect is less immediate, but it endures over time. It is a flame that may smolder beneath the ashes or is a faint glow in the night—a glow that suddenly flares up again, to enlighten or to destroy. The book is like the lamp of the sanctuary, always ready to point out to the faithful the holy tabernacle and its divine host; or it will be the volcano whose terrible eruptions plunge entire cities into desolation and death. You desire pleasant conversations and wise, comforting words; you hate blasphemy and corrupting speech; therefore, seek out good books and detest bad ones.”
