Humanity is happier with literature than without it

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“When literary, social, domestic, and religious education do not go hand in hand, the outcome is a man who is both unhappy and helpless.”

Niccolo TOMMASEO (1802-1874)
Italian Writer

“As an activity of the mind, I place literature above philosophy or science. Therein, thoughts can be just as intense, just as sharp, and they address all men, spanning all centuries. Not only does literature thus participate in the elucidation of the world, but it also adds beauty and thus renders it a better place. I truly believe, even if I have no way to prove it, that humanity is happier with literature than without it.”

Tzvetan TODOROV (1939-2017)
Literary critic
