Learn to Think

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“Our teaching is destined not only to instruct the mind, but also to shape the whole life of your children; that is, their way of thinking, of feeling and of reacting, just as much outside of the school as within it.”

Father CALMEL (1914-1975)
Dominican

“The goal of your studies is not to pile up a certain quantity of notions within your mind, but to make you penetrate profoundly into a life of understanding, to teach you to think. It is only through your school work that you will achieve this. You are not interested in what you are doing because you never go beyond the surface of things. The first obstacles stop you. You must desire to conquer them, and then you will come into contact with great beauty. The seemingly unnecessary complications of Latin syntax bore you, but at the end there is Virgil, there is Tacitus. History, with its great complexity of facts and its implacable chronology, seems a tedious maze; nevertheless, it is as inspiring as the most beautiful novel, for it spreads before our eyes the drama of humanity on its way through time towards its eternal destiny.”

André CHARLIER (1895-1971)
Writer, director of the school des Roches
