The Name of Mother

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“Understand that all those who have built before you, have loved you.”

Father Jerome Kiefer (1907-1985)
Monk of the Abbey of Sept-Fons

“What I recommend to you above all is love and tenderness for the children. You will always win their hearts and minds by great gentleness. Remember that they call you “Mother” and that you must really be their mothers by grace in order to raise them in the grace and love of the Savior. Like an affectionate mother who loves her children infinitely, love your girls, whether or not you are directly responsible for them; love them with the sentiments that faith inspires, understanding that they are truly children of God. Love them sincerely in God, without familiarity, without lowness and most of all, without particular friendship. (…) I recommend that you be very gentle with the sheep who have been confided to you.”

Sainte Marie-Euphrasie PELLETIER (1796- 1868)
Foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters
