What the Children Beg of Us

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“The intelligence goes hand in hand with eternity.”

Saint Thomas Aquinas
Dominican (1224 – 1274)

“Listen to the supplications of Jesus Christ in the souls of your children. May you have not only enough affection and imagination, but more importantly, enough Faith to understand what your children beg of you:
– We want to know what we are and why we were created. We want to know what this world is – this world in which we live – and whether we ought to follow it or strive against its current; and if we oppose it, what testimony we ought to give in it. We want to know what combats we will have to face and how to be armed to face them. We want to know if it is true that woman has a mission, willed by God himself, and if it is worth sacrificing ourselves to respond to His call.
– We need the climate of our school to be one of honesty, joy and nobility; we will give of ourselves willingly to enkindle such a spirit, but we want to see it actually become a reality. We do not refuse either discipline or punishments; however, let them come from hearts that understand and love us, so that we can accept them more easily.
– Give us the culture and doctrine that we need to complete our voyage with honor among men in this ‘vale of tears.’
– Form us to govern ourselves; form us in virtue, but in the virtue of Our Lord: loving, docile and always turned towards prayer.”

Father Roger-Thomas Calmel
Dominican (1914 – 1975)
