A Craving for Music

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“And when, in the month of May, Joan mounts her warhorse, one would have to be pretty cunning to want to prevent all of France from leaving with her. They saw what Joan could do with a sword. Now do you understand this sword that St. Michael gave me! This sword! This brilliant sword! She isn’t called hate, she is called love!”

“My father, who was always looking for a way to give us a little joy, bought a piano… It became the warm hearth of the house. I was consumed with a craving for music and soon enough I had made enough progress that my professor counselled me to leave my studies and to devote myself entirely to music. That was a temptation for me, but it didn’t last. My desire for knowledge was stronger. I had the inexpressible feeling that music would never abandon me; and in some ways that was so. Music remained an ever present companion for me, always ready to give me joy, ready to welcome me into the secret of its wordless language which by simple proportion of sound knew how to give such high pleasure, how to say so many things, how to persuade, to touch, to move, to shake, and even to dazzle the heart.”
