“The act of teaching is more precious than martyrdom.”
Saint THOMAS AQUINAS (1224-1274)
Dominican, Doctor of the Church
“Archbishop: Do you not think, Sir Thomas, that you might perhaps be the the one mistaken, seeing as you are alone in your opinion against the Great Council of the Kingdom, its esteemed Prelates, its Parliament and its Universities? Being alone is never a good sign.
Thomas More: I believe, my Lordship, that I have on my side another great Council, even greater than that of any Kingdom – that of the General Council of all Christendom. Even if the number of bishops and Universities and all the wise doctors who have thought that they should take this oath were even greater than your Lordship seems to think it is; even if everyone, the whole world, had taken the oath, those would still be only the living. The immense number of those who have thought as I do, sometimes at the peril of their lives, since the beginning of Christendom – many of whom are already saints in Heaven – the immense crowd of the just who will fill the earth on the day of the Resurrection of the dead, the day when there will be no more earthly kingdoms at all, this number is with me; I am sure of it. In truth, I thank Your Lordship for your worries about my solitude, but I do not feel alone.”
