The country that has lost its music

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“Music is in itself a teacher; it acts directly on the intelligence, the will, and the sensibility, equally for better or for worse”

I was born amongst a people who had no social security but who sang. Today we die cured, but no one sings anymore. There is probably no connection between the two. Although … as far back as I can remember, I heard very few rich people sing. I’m speaking of really rich people, those who are aware of their riches, and thus worried. At our house, there was no money, and so we weren’t lacking anything, especially not songs. How did we manage? A mystery. We didn’t have television. We didn’t have a radio. We didn’t have a record player. You might think we were living in prehistoric times… but no, it was simply a human life… We knew dozens of songs by heart, verses and refrains. On autumn and winter evenings, while eating chestnuts with new cider, everyone sang: the women who were knitting, patching, sewing, or repairing the fishing nets, and the men, at the end of the table surrounded by the blue-grey smoke of their pipes.”
