Two Different Standards

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“France will be saved if each one values all that he can value and all that he must value.”

Jules LEMAÎTRE (1853-1914)
Writer, Theatre Critic

“We should recognize that we often have two different standards when judging our conduct and the conduct of others… When our neighbor doesn’t finish his work, I say that he is lazy; when I don’t finish my work, it’s just that I was too busy. When he insists on his point of view, it’s stubbornness; when I insist on mine, I’m being firm. When he takes his time to do something, he’s a slowpoke, when I take my time it’s because I’m a careful worker. When he is quick to do something, he is slipshod; when I’m quick it’s because I’m deft. When he does something without being asked, he is nosing into affairs not his own, but when I do the same, I’m merely taking initiative. When he defends his rights, he is full of himself, when I defend mine, I have character.”
