The First Steps of One’s Way in Life

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

I am from my childhood as from a country.

“I explerience pleasure in the taste of this sun, just as I savour this childish smell of desks, chalk, and blackboards. I lock myself up with such joy in this well-protected childhood! I know it well: first of all comes childhood, middle school and comrades; then examination day will arrive. When we receive a diploma. When, with a bit of a heartache, we cross a doorway, beyond which we are all of a sudden men. Then the foot weighs heavily on the earth. We are already making our way through life; the first steps of one’s way in life. Finally, we will try our weapons against our real opponents. We will use our ruler, protractor, and compass to build the world, or to triumph over our enemies. Gone are childhood games! I know that the typical college student is not afraid to face life. He is burning with impatience. The torments, dangers and bitterness of adult life do not intimidate him. But here I am, a funny college student; I am one who knows his happiness and who is not so much in a hurry to face life.”
