The Teacher: Father of His Students’ Intelligence

“Walk as children of the light”
(Ephesians 5:8)

Parents, leaders, and educators, we have a mission, a duty to lead children's souls toward the Light which will be their guide and their happiness. In order to illuminate the way that lies before each one of us, once a week we invite you to discover some of the words of certain wisemen and witnesses, measuring their worth by the words of St. Thomas Aquinas: “Do not consider the one who speaks, but whatever good you hear from him, confide it to your memory.” (from The Sixteen Ways to Acquire the Treasure of Knowledge by St. Thomas). Happy reading!

“You who loosen the tongues of children, guide my tongue and pour on my lips the grace of your blessing.
Give me insight to understand, the capacity to retain, method and ease in learning, discernment to interpret and abundant grace to express myself.
Prepare the beginning of my work, guide its progress, crown its completion, You, true God and true man, Who live and reign world without end. Amen.”

Saint THOMAS d’AQUIN
Dominican, Doctor of the Church

“The Angelic Doctor, in the footsteps of Aristotle, esteems that we can never repay what we owe a teacher any more than we can repay God or our parents. Teaching is an art and more than an art. Just compare the art of the teacher with that of the doctor. A doctor helps the sick man recover his lost health, but he does not communicate his own health. The teacher, however, adds his own knowledge to that, innate or already acquired, of his disciple; this according to a vital and personal influence which changes the teacher into a parent, for he is the father of his student’s intelligence.”

Jacques VILLEMONAIS (20th century writer)
