“The Angelic Doctor, in the footsteps of Aristotle, esteems that we can never repay what we owe a teacher any more than we can repay God or our parents. Teaching is an art and more than an art. Just compare the art of the teacher with that of the doctor. A doctor helps the sick man recover his lost health, but he does not communicate his own health. The teacher, however, adds his own knowledge to that, innate or already acquired, of his disciple; this according to a vital and personal influence which changes the teacher into a parent, for he is the father of his student’s intelligence.”
